Welcome to the Folwell School, Performing Arts Magnet Elementary Vocal and General Music Department

The Vocal and General Music Department offers the unique teachings of appreciation for Choral and General Music learning.  In this department you will find following opportunities:


Primary Choir  -  This Choral group consists of students from first grade through third.  The students are auditioned and selected upon being able to hear and match pitch accurately. Participation is not mandatory, but students who elect to be a part of this group are required to be present for all scheduled rehearsals and performances.  In this group we sing unison songs, canons and partner songs.  Good singing practices and ear training is also emphasized. 

4th and 5th Grade Choir  -  This Choral group consists of students from fourth and fifth grade.  The students are auditioned and selected upon being able to hear and match pitch accurately. Participation is not mandatory, but students who elect to be a part of this group are required to be present for all scheduled rehearsals and performances.  In this group we sing unison songs, canons, partner songs and two part arrangements.  Good singing practices and ear training is also emphasized.

Upper School Concert Choir  - This Choral group consist of Middle school students from grades sixth through eighth.  It is recommended that students have an understanding of pitch and intonation and enjoys singing before considering this class.  The students are auditioned and selected upon being able to hear and match pitch accurately. Participation is not mandatory, but students who elect to be a part of this group are required to be present for all scheduled rehearsals and performances. In this group we work on good singing practices, sight-reading music, singing two and three part arrangements. This group performs two major concerts throughout the school year. This group also has many other invites to sing for special occasions, such as special conferences and workshops throughout the Metropolitan area and the Minnesota Twins. It is mandatory that all participants attend all scheduled performances.

General Music - This course is offered to all students from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. It is possible due to scheduling that a grade level may not receive a general music offering. In this course students are taught the basic elements of music and the applications through the use of rhythmic instruments and singing.


Musical Drama/ Keyboard  -  This course is offered as an elective enrichment course for middle school students in grades sixth through eighth. In this course students are taught how to manage a stage and lights during a musical production. Students are required to participate in two short drama productions and display appropriate class participation. Musical Drama is the first semester and Keyboard is offered for the second semester.  In the Keyboard course the students learn to play the piano, read notes, rhythms and chords.  Interested in learning the piano and beginning keyboard students are encouraged to take this course.
