Hello, my name is Mrs. Jane Blackwell. I am the K- 4 Elementary General and Vocal Music teacher here at Folwell Performing Arts Magnet. I am a native of Huntsville, Alabama. My teaching career started in Alexandria, Virginia, after graduating from Alabama A & M University. I have taught K-6 General and Vocal Music for the Alexandria City Public Schools in Alexandria, Virginia. One of my greatest highlights during my musical career and journey was that of being a conductor for the All-City Alexandria City Public Schools Chorus. I have also conducted and directed several middle and lower school musical productions and presented for the Choral events at Morris Park Elementary and the Ramsey International Fine Arts Center. Other highlights include choral performances of singing the National Anthem for the Minnesota Twins, Timberwolves, America Sings, Up With People, Collaboration with Sweet Honey and the Rock Organization, and Vocal Essence. I am also affiliated with the Learning Through Music at Folwell Performing Arts Magnet (Boston Music Consortium/ New England Conservatory) for Integrating the Arts in academic learning.

My name changed as a newlywed as of September 9, 2018. I was married for over 34 years to my late husband, James Mason. We have four beautiful young adult children. Who are graduates of Hamline University, St Thomas University, University of Minnesota, and the youngest a former Ramsey student is presently attending Wichita State. During most holidays, my family and I host college students from all around the world internationally who are not able to make it back to their homes. It has been a family tradition since we have been in Minnesota. I hold a Master's Degree in Teaching and Learning from St. Mary's University in Minnesota. Currently, I am working toward a Doctoral Degree from the Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Some of my hobbies include bowling, cooking, and crafts, singing and listening to gospel and jazz music. I believe school should be fun and exciting.

Here at Folwell, I am honored to serve as a mentor for students from the following local universities and colleges in the metropolitan area: University of Minnesota, Hamline University, Waldorf College, Northwestern University, St. Olaf and Metropolitan State University.  In 2000 I was recognized as Teacher of Distinction and in 2018 honored as a Teacher of The Year Candidate by the Minneapolis Public School District. I believe music is critical in the learning process for academic achievement and that music is the foundation for language and communication.
