Welcome to Middle School Vocal Music!

I am excited to be in my 24th year of teaching vocal music. I returned to Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) two years ago and this is my first year as a FIREBIRD at Folwell Performing Arts Magnet. I am very much looking forward to continuing the fantastic work at Folwell with our middle level choral, general music and rock band programs that have really taken off! In addition to these course offerings I will teach beginning guitar, music exploratory and work with the MN Opera Company in our afterschool program.

I was born in Chadron, NE and raised in Hudson, IA near Cedar Falls, IA and I love living in Minnesota!  I'm a true midwest gal. I began playing piano at the age of 4 switching from piano lessons to voice lessons at the age of 14, began playing flute in 5th grade and began choir in the 8th grade. Singing encaputered my soul in elementary when my parents to my sister and me to an opera performance.  As the daughter of two musicians and band/vocal music teachers, music has been my lifeline where I truly believe I would not have made it though grammer and high school with out music and terrific music teachers.  I was fortunate enough to participate in choir, band, and theatre, as well as take private voice and piano lessons all while growing up. I am a Minnesota Golden Gopher Alum. I graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Music in Education.  During my college years at the University of Minnesota I performed with the University of Minnesota Chamber Singers and Opera. I have performed in professional and non professionsal choirs, plays and musicals on and off stage throughout my adult life. I am currently a contracted professional singer in the Minnesota Chorale and am looking forward to many performances singing in the MN Chorale with the Minnesota Orchestra at Orchestra Hall this season.

My career began at Northeast Middle School here in Minneapolis, MN. The position was part -time. In a short 3 years advocating for a variety of music opportunities for middle school students, the position grew to a full-time teaching position. From there I transferred to North High building a successful Vocal Program. I am super excited to be back in Minneapolis where my fantastic career began. Throughout my teaching career I have had the pleasure of teaching Pre-K through Community College in Minnesota, Iowa and Texas. I have performed professionally and Non-professionally in the states of Minnesota, Iowa, Texas and California.   Middle School and High School choirs under my direction have received high honorable performance awards. Private vocal students who have studied with me have received music college scholarships advancing their success in singing and music teaching careers.

I live at home with my 11 year old cat, King Solstice Midnight, who thinks he is the boss. When I am not practicing/performing music, I am usually out taking pictures, spending time with friends and family, trying out new restaurants, golfing, boating, or watching my favorite shows.

Music is an integral part in every students' education. I strive to effectively integrate the arts within the music classroom in order to successfully enhance student learning in their specialist classes as well as their general classroom studies, with the understanding that music and the arts can be used as a catalyst for all learning.

Nearly everyone enjoys music, whether by listening to it, singing, or playing an instrument. Click this link to read 20 Important Benefits having music in school!
